Yes; —and so it is certain that a small country cannot contend with a great, that few cannot contend with many, that the weak cannot contend with the strong.
Then the small can nowise stand against the great: the few can nowise stand against the many; the weak can nowise stand against the strong.
"So the small is dearly no match for the large," continued Mencius, "the few is clearly no match for the many, and the weak is clearly no match for the strong.
Hence, rejoined the sage, a small country should not engage in hostilities with a great nation. Few people should not go to war with many ; nor should the weak fight with the strong.
